Do wind turbines for homes save money?

Wind energy has long been known to be an alternative to coal energy. But did you know that a home wind turbine can lower your electricity bill by 50 to 90 percent?  How would you like to have monthly electricity bills of only $15? Of course it depends where you live, but if you are in the northern end of the country, and don’t use so much air conditioning, you might be pleasantly surprised by how much you’ll save. Small wind turbines for homes can save big dollars depending on the wind speed factor and the size of the turbine.

Wind energy and turbine size

The average home will use about 9,400 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity every year (which is about 780 kWh per month). In order to meet this demand, you will need to generate wind energy with a turbine that is rated in the range of 5 to 15 kilowatts. This will depend greatly on the average wind speed in the area.

Should I get a wind turbine for my home?

Now before you rush out and buy yourself some wind power, make sure you have enough space! A home wind turbine can be a quite large and may not be suitable for urban or small-lot suburban homes. There are of course exceptions: some very small wind turbines (that have rotors of one meter or less in diameter) on very small towers.

Next up you should consider how windy your residence is. Hence the name: Wind Energy. It’s no good buying a wind turbine if you don’t have any wind to power it. As a general rule of thumb, a turbine owner should have at least a 10 mph average wind speed and be paying at least 10 cents/kWh for electricity.

Wind turbines for homes are becoming more and more popular as an antedote to the rising cost of electricity. But what exactly is a wind turbine? A wind turbine is the device that uses the power of wind to produce mechanical energy. This mechanical energy is then converted into electrical energy.

Sometimes people mistake a wind turbine with a windmill. Although similar, they are not the same. A windmill usually uses wind energy for mechanical uses (pumping out water or for grinding purposes), and not for converting it into electricity.
